zakat system implications

Some long-term social implications of Zakat

Zakat is a part of Islamic teachings. Its nature, structure, and function can be better understood when viewed in the context of the Islamic way of life as a whole. As a result, it is critical to clarify the fundamental teachings of Islam and to emphasize Zakat as a fundamental social institution. The teachings of the Quranic wisdom and Sunnah have evolved and are established social orders based on the strongest and most stable foundations, including the Zakat and other Sadaqaat systems. Because Zakat is a vital system of Islamic doctrine, it plays an active role in Muslim society’s spiritual and social life. Zakat payment is not only essential and obligatory, but it is also a key source of societal stability as an institution and system. The Zakat system assures equitable wealth distribution and has a significant impact on society’s overall structure.

Zakat cleanses the giver’s soul of selfishness and greed, as well as ensures that a portion of their money goes to help the unfortunate. Though paying Zakat appears to reduce money, it causes wealth to circulate, resulting in its multiplication and therefore involving more and more people in its advantages. All Muslims who are Sahib-e-Nisab, i.e. have a predetermined limit of wealth, are required to pay a prescribed amount of their capital or savings, such as farm products, animals, business activities, paper currency, and precious metals such as gold and silver, each year. A strong and viable economy is required for a human society to develop and prosper. To make ends meet, the destitute might easily fall prey to a variety of societal ills. Financially secure people, on the other hand, have the confidence to resist social pressure.

Major Social Problems and How Zakat Contributes to Solving Them and Eliminating Their Causes

1) The Problem Of The Socio-Economic Gap

Extreme poverty is a serious societal catastrophe that Islam condemns. “It is He who created everything on the earth for you,” the Qur’an emphasizes (2:29). One of Islam’s goals is to reduce socioeconomic disparities by offering support and financial assistance to the have-nots to bring them closer to the haves. Islam addresses this issue through much of its legislation, social structures, and economic directions to establish justice in wealth and income distribution (see 59:7). Zakat intends to offer the poor not only aid but also ownership of the means of production by providing them with the tools and machinery needed for productive employment so that those who get zakat are eternally removed from the poor and needy.

2) The Problem Of Beggars And Begging

There are two key ideas taught by the Prophet (PBUH) to his Companions regarding self-sufficiency: To begin with, labor is a source of revenue and a means of subsistence. Muslims are encouraged to work their way around the world in search of Allah’s blessings. Working, whether manual or not, is preferable to live on humiliating grants. Second, unnecessarily interrogating someone is disallowed since it is demeaning. Except for those who are in severe need, Muslims are forbidden from soliciting help.

There are two practical solutions to the begging problem. The first is to find suitable jobs for everyone willing to work. This is one of the Islamic state’s responsibilities to its citizens. When it comes to the issue of unemployment, the government cannot afford to be inert. The state cannot continue to provide sadaqah assistance without addressing the source of the problem. “Sadaqah is not lawful to any rich person or a powerful and capable one,” the prophet (PBUH) declared.

The Prophet’s (PBUH) practical teaching, when he did not want that person to take zakat since he could earn, and that such taking is only acceptable as a last resort. The government is in charge of assisting people in finding suitable employment. Before turning to begging or asking people, the Prophet (PBUH) emphasized that one must employ all of one’s abilities, no matter how limited they may be, and exhaust all forms of productive activity. The remedy is to provide not only instant alleviation but also the means of self-sufficiency and constructive labor.

Secondly, we should try to use zakat as a means of offering long-term help. We should not only provide the needy with fish to eat, but we should also provide programs to educate them on how to catch fish so that they can provide for themselves in the future. This concept of zakat application could be useful in current times, especially for the development of human capital, both on an individual and community level.

The function of zakat in this regard is self-evident. It can supply unemployed workers with the necessary tools, machinery, and capital to enable them to work productively. Zakat can also be used to pay for employee training or rehabilitation. Above all, it can develop communal enterprises and industries run by poor and formerly employed employees (e.g., Ladang Rakyat in the Malaysian State of Kelantan). The second component of Islam’s begging cure is a social insurance for individuals who do not have a source of income. In the present idea appropriate to a given Islamic community, such people are guaranteed a minimum standard of life or an income over the poverty line. Poverty or unemployment can be caused by one of two factors: physical incapacity owing to old age, sickness, or impairment, or inability to obtain work due to economic or non-economic issues that are beyond his or her ability; both categories require zakat support.

3. Peace And Prosperity

Zakat promotes social justice by giving financial balance to society’s many strata. It reduces the rate of crime and terrorist tendencies among society’s members. As a result, the entire society works together to achieve growth and prosperity. The rate of unemployment is reduced and the possibilities of an economic recession are reduced when wealth is distributed equally.

4) The Problem Of Accidents and Natural Calamities

Islam tries to ensure that each person in Islamic society has enough food and is safe from harm so that each person can devote a significant portion of his or her energy to worshipping Allah. Islamic law ensures that everyone in the Islamic state, Muslim or not, has a decent quality of living, including food, clothing, and housing, as well as health care and education. As previously stated, the zakat system attempts to provide long-term relief to the poor and needy, as well as their families. Furthermore, “those in debt,” which includes those affected by disasters or catastrophes, are not left to rely solely on voluntary generosity but are also granted a share of the zakat income.

A problem develops! How much do such people get paid? The Prophet (PBUH) says in the Hadith that such a person may ask “till he secures plenty of food.” According to the current understanding, this quantity varies from person to person, based on aspects such as average living standards, family size, and social position and behavior. At the same time, it is contingent on the zakat agency’s ability to provide finances as well as several other considerations.

5. The Problem Of Homelessness

Islam believes that everyone should have a house and be a part of a family and that no one should be homeless. As a result, suitable shelter for a person and his or her family falls under the category of necessary needs, for which Allah has levied zakat. According to An-Nawawi, necessities include food, clothing, housing, and everything else that is necessary for life, at a level that is appropriate for the receiver and his or her social station, without being extravagant or frugal. “It is the responsibility of the wealthier people of each region to provide all of the requirements of the poor people in that region.” If the revenues of zakat and fay’ are insufficient, the rich’s riches must still be used to meet the necessities for food, clothing for summer and winter, and shelter that protects from the heat, rain, and the gaze of passers-by.
